Note from the Tournament Chairman—2008
Our first Classic in 2006 was embraced by entrants, local media, and business sponsors. We had 135 entrants and deposited $4,200 into the Nantucket Angler’s Club Scholarship Fund. We expect up to 200 entrants in 2008. As we enter our third year, I would like to share our goals:

  • Promote a community-wide fall inshore saltwater fishing tournament on Nantucket.
  • Serve as one of the fund raising activities for the Nantucket Angler’s Club Scholarship Fund.
  • Adopt a leading role for teaching fishing etiquette and proper stewardship of our limited fishery resources.

Evidence indicates that traditional recreational and commercial practices have stressed saltwater fisheries and that change is needed. To improve conservation in the tournament, we will add two elements:
Frequent leader board updates e-mailed to entrants so they can be more selective about keeping a fish.
Better limits on the number and size of fish can angler can weigh-in during the tournament. “Limit your catch, not catch your limit.”
Individual anglers are vital in conservation, too. The likelihood of released fish surviving improves by using:

  • Proper handling, revival, and release techniques.
  • Artificial lures. But, if using bait, use circle hooks.
  • Barb-less or de-barbed hooks.
  • Heavy enough tackle to land fish in a short time.

I hope your plans include joining us in the 2008 Nantucket Inshore Classic. Working together, we can develop a sustainable and healthy fishing tournament that benefits many facets of our Nantucket community.
